Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is the daughter of British lawyers Jacqueline Luesby (born in Paris) and Chris Watson (born in Paris). After moving to Oxfordshire when she was five, she enrolled in the Dragon School. From the age of six Emma knew that she wanted to be an actor and for a number of years she was a student at the Oxford Branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts a part-time theater school, where she learned singing dancing and acting. By the age of ten she had appeared and played as the main character in several Stagecoach shows and school productions. Casting began in 1999 for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the movie adaptation of British writer J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was found by casting agents through Emma's Oxford theater teacher. David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter Harry Potter's Sorcerer's Stone and Ron Weasley told Emma after the eight auditions that she'd been picked for these roles. The cast included Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint and Rupert Grint. Emma's first appearance in a film was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001. It also was the film that was most popular of 2001. Its opening days and weekends of the sales were record breaking. Critics gave high praise to the film, particularly the young performers. The Daily Telegraph praised Emma for her performance. Emma received five nominations for her exceptional performance. Then, she was awarded the Young Artist Award in Leading Young Actresses of the Film.
